One of my very first additions to the photography Studio right after getting the basic softboxes all in one kit from Amazon was this Ring Light and I have been using it for a couple of months in more than twenty shoots, I think I´m ready to share my experience.

It´s funny when you are reviewing the pictures with a client after a session, 90% of the time they prefer the results of the ring light among soft box lighting.

First of all, there are several ring lights available but I decided to go with Neewer for a couple of reasons, I already have Neewer products that worked pretty well and the price was really competitive. There are also two models of this ring light, both powering 400W, one has a dimmer for the light and the other one does not.

Once you plug it in and you are ready to switch it on always remember to warn your subject to close his eyes as the light coming from the fluorescent tube it´s actually really bright.

Test shots.

Here is an example of both female and male subjects, notice the difference on the catch light for light coloured eyes and dark ones.

The Downside of the Deal.

As in everything in this life, there is the good side and the bad side in which for this piece of equipment I would say is the catch light on the eye

The ring shaped catch light works best with blue or green eyes but I find the ring light on dark eyed people too distracting.

Balancing the White Balance.

Fluorescent sources of light are always a bit trickier to get it right than flash or strobe, when the latter will give you warmer tones the fluorescent will give you more cold blueish colour, to tweak your balance set your camera on white balance “Auto” or “Fluorescent”. But if you want to get the white balance even more accurate I will recommend to use a colour checker.

The Technical Stuff.

  • Dimmable 10″ ring fluorescent flash light
  • Power: 50W (equivalent to 400W on an incandescent one)
  • With reinforced flexible arm which will move freely and never droop
  • Extra Long Cord and Heavy Duty Thumb Screws
  • A must have for photography enthusiasts

Where to get it.
