I was recently contacted by Neewer to review on of their latest LED light, the Neewer 960 RGB Led Light. This is my third Neewer LED light, I originally purchased the 480 LED and this unit has more output power, plus the fact that it can be switched to any colour, not just bi-colour, makes it a better option.

The light packs 480 RGB bulbs, which 240 are cool colour beads and 240 are warm colour beads and a CRI of 95+.

One of the greatest additions from previous models is the inclusion of 3 modes: CCT, HSI and Scene, in CCT mode you can change the colour temperature from 3200K to 5600K and stepless brightness adjustment from 0-100% are available to be controlled. In HSI mode you can control de hue, saturation and intensity via panel knobs and in the scene mode you can activate film making effect such as Police Car, Ambulance, Fire Truck, party, Fireworks, Lightning and TV Screen.

Additionaly, you can power the light with a v-lock so it’ll run for ages if you don’t have a socket nearby, the irony being the battery will be twice the cost of the unit. One thing we noticed regarding the ballhead system that the LED uses is not strong enough, making it difficult to keep the light in place, this issue is especially noticeable when attaching an additional V-Lock battery.

The build quality is good, considering this is a budget LED light, the casing is aluminium, it’s light and easy to carry.

The included carrying bag is great for transporting the light. It’s a nice touch if you are constantly shooting on location.

PROS:

– Good quality materials
– Very sturdy construction
– Very high quality LEDs, much better than cheaper lights
– Due to aluminium housing it runs cool
– No issues running for extended periods of time
– Fine and accurate control for both LEDs groups
– Robust power supply
– It can be control via bluetooth with the Neewer app
– Carrying bag included
– Last, but definitely not least, this is a very powerful light and can easily fill a scene or even small room.

CONS:

– The adjustable ballhead is a bit flimsy, really have to tighten it up to keep the LED in place.

CONCLUSION:

A great budget solution for fast moving low budget productions, certainly planning to get another one at some point.
